On 1st July 2017, Joint Ukrainian-Romanian Danube Day celebration will take place in Tiachiv, Zakarpattia. For the last 10 years, it has become a nice environmental awareness raising tradition for Tisza basin (as one of Danube sub-basins). The key messages for this year`s event are “Tisza is valuable for us and important for our lives!” and “What we can do for the river now is to collect recyclables separately”.

For the first time in Zakarpattia, a unique mural depicting Tisza river as a beautiful girl will be opened in the centre of the city. During the day the quest «Trip from Tisza by the Danube to the Black Sea» will be carried out with different interactive and educational tasks for children

 Also, the new tradition of the “Aqua Oscar” will be established. The awarding ceremony and red carpet walk will be organised for the winners of the short selfie videos competition describing the topic “My life and Tisza”. Another competition “Plastic treasures”, organised between schools of Tiachiv community, will promote reducing the amount of plastic entering the landfill and river.

This year`s Danube Day will highlight the importance of cooperation between Romania and Ukraine in the view of 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.

Background information: Ukraine and Romania are parties to the International Commission for Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR). The countries have taken obligations to protect rivers of the Danube basin including Tisza. The key public environmental awareness event of the ICPDR is Danube Day, which is conducted annually at the same time in the countries of the Danube basin. The event is organised jointly by the EU-funded project "Support to Ukraine in approximation of the EU environmental acquis”, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, State Agency of Water Resources, Tisza River Basin Authority, Tiachiv territorial community, Tiachiv city administration, Company Coca-Cola beverages, Ukraine, Regional TV company “Tisza-1”,    Group of energy companies “RENER” and Zakarpattia oblast organization of All-Ukrainian Ecological League. In total, over 250 people are expected to participate in the event.
